This book, published to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the opening of the Nakamura Keith Haring Museum, is filled with all the charm of Keith Haring, a painter who represents the American art scene in the 80s.

His career as an artist, which began with doodle drawings in the subway, continued for 10 years until his death in 1990. Haring developed his creative activities as if he were running through his short life. This book traces the history of the museum over the past 10 years, and presents about 160 drawings, sculptures, and other works, mainly from the museum's collection. This exhibition introduces Haring's wide-ranging activities, which deny violence and discrimination, send out messages of peace and the joy of living, and try to change human consciousness and the nature of society.

[About the author]

Opened in 2007 and celebrating its 10th anniversary this year, the Nakamura Keith Haring Museum (Kobuchizawa, Yamanashi Prefecture) is the world's only Keith Haring museum. Director Kazuo Nakamura met Keith Haring's work in 1987. Fascinated by Haring's works, Nakamura continued to collect them, and the number of items in the museum's collection, which was about 130 in the year it opened, has now reached about 300.

This catalog, first-ever published in both Japanese and English, is packed with the legacy of Keith Haring who was the center of the 80s American contemporary art scene. Starting from the notable Subway Drawings, Haring rose to fame quickly and spent only a decade under the spotlight until his death in 1990. Following the timeline of the ten years of the Nakamura Keith Haring Collection and introducing the extensive museum collection of Haring's works—including drawings, sculptures and other approximately 160 works in the collection —we explore the artist's sociopolitical messages of anti violence, anti discrimination, peace, love, and humanity. The Nakamura Keith Haring Collection, located in Yamanashi, Japan, opened its doors in 2007, as the only museum in the world to principally exhibit the artworks of Keith Haring. The founder Dr. Kazuo Nakamura's first encounter with Haring's work was in 1987. Nakamura was immediately drawn to Haring's art and started collecting the artwor ks. After 30 years, the collection is now expanded to about 200 works.
