What is Pride Month?

June is Pride Month—a time to celebrate the diverse identities within the LGBTQ+ community and to work toward a society free of discrimination and prejudice.

Pride Month traces its origins to the Stonewall Uprising, which took place on June 28, 1969, in New York City. This event began when LGBTQ+ individuals stood up and protested against an unjust police raid at the gay bar known as the Stonewall Inn. It marked a turning point, as it was the first time that members of the LGBTQ+ community rose up in such large numbers in response to the oppression and discrimination they faced.

The Stonewall Uprising came to be recognized as a symbol of the LGBTQ+ rights movement, and June has since been established as Pride Month. Today, Pride events aimed at raising awareness and advancing LGBTQ+ rights are held in cities around the world.

At the Nakamura Keith Haring Collection Museum Shop, we carry items created with a spirit of solidarity and respect for the LGBTQ+ community, in tribute to Keith Haring’s legacy of using art to challenge social issues.
