【Pop Shopとは】
1980年初頭、ニューヨークの地下鉄の広告板に貼られた黒い紙に絵を描く、「サブウェイドローイング」で一躍有名になったキース・ヘリング。
しかし。彼の名前が世に知れ渡るやいなや、ヘリングの思いとは裏腹に、サブウェイドローイングは次々に地下鉄から不当に持ち去られ、転売されるようになります。ヘリングは1986年にサブウェイドローイングを中止し、新しいコミュニケーションのためのアートプロジェクトをスタートしました。それが「ポップショップ」です。
缶バッチやポストカード、Tシャツ、小型ラジオなど自らデザインしたグッズには、天井から床までヘリングのドローイングが施されたショップに並べられました。アンディ・ウォーホルがアメリカの消費文化を崇高な芸術にのし上げたことに習い、彼はインターネットもアイポッドもない時代に、１億円のアートを１人のコレクターに売るのではなく、１ドルのアートを１億人に流通させることを考えたのです。
