Official merchandise of ACT UP, the HIV activist organization founded in New York in March 1987.
As a decentralized collective without formal leaders or committees, ACT UP protested the Reagan administration’s inadequate response to the AIDS crisis.
In 1989, to challenge government indifference to the growing AIDS epidemic, Keith Haring created the work 《Ignorance = Fear / Silence = Death》, inspired by the “Three Wise Monkeys.” He was also a member of ACT UP and supported its activism.
ACT UP continues its efforts today, working toward ending the HIV epidemic by addressing structural factors such as stigma, discrimination, and poverty.
