National Coming Out Day

National Coming Out Day was established in 1988 as a day to celebrate those who openly share their sexual orientation or gender identity.
Its message has spread worldwide, and each year on October 11, events and celebrations are held across the globe.

Keith Haring was one of the artists who worked openly as a gay man.
In 1988, at the launch of National Coming Out Day, Haring created the artwork that would become the symbol of this commemorative day.

The work depicts a figure stepping out from darkness into a vibrant world of colour.
Celebrating the courage to live as one’s true self, it remains internationally recognised as a symbol of National Coming Out Day.
