In June 1980, at the downtown NYC art space The Kitchen, Arthur Russell’s alias Dinosaur L performed a legendary live set—now officially released for the first time.
At the time, Russell was exploring the intersection of experimental music and dance/disco through this project. His approach of live performance, manipulation, and editing was a precursor to what we now call live remixes and live edits.
The lineup featured Peter Zummo, Bill Ruyle, Julius Eastman, and Steven Hall, creating a sound where improvisation and structure intertwined—a true manifestation of the NYC underground at its peak.
This rare live archive captures another groundbreaking side of Arthur Russell, where raw grooves and unpredictable turns collide in a sonic whirlwind.

Arthur Russell
Born in 1951 in Iowa, Arthur Russell was a cellist, composer, and producer.
Transcending genres such as minimal music, jazz, disco, ambient, folk, and dub, he was a singular presence in the underground music scene of 1980s New York.
Through collaborations with Walter Gibbons and Larry Levan, as well as co-founding Sleeping Bag Records, he helped bridge club culture and avant-garde music, pioneering new sonic landscapes.
Posthumously rediscovered, his influence continues to inspire many musicians today.
