Published by The Monacelli Press, a New York–based publisher, this volume offers a new perspective on Keith Haring’s work, with a particular focus on his “three-dimensional works (sculptural expression).” It sheds light on Haring’s sculptural practice, which has not previously received sufficient attention, and reveals the important role it played within his broader creative practice.

After moving to New York in 1978, Haring drew on a wide range of surfaces not ordinarily considered canvases, including trash discarded on the street, household appliances, and subway walls. His three-dimensional works, ranging from automobiles, vases, and refrigerators to even a sarcophagus, also became sites of collaboration with Jean-Michel Basquiat, Kenny Scharf, LA2, and others.
Haring further extended his signature bold linework across clothing, stage sets, and the human body. Through collaborations with Grace Jones, Bill T. Jones, Madonna, Annie Leibovitz, and others, he forged creative connections that extended beyond the boundaries of the art world.

Published to coincide with a major exhibition at Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art, the volume brings together more than 350 illustrations, documentary photographs of Haring at work, photographs of the works, and essays by curators, scholars, and collectors to explore Haring’s creative practice through the lens of “3D.”
