About “National Coming Out Day”
National Coming Out Day was established in 1988 as a day to celebrate people who openly share their sexual orientation or gender identity. Its message has since spread around the world, with various events and celebrations held each year on October 11.
Keith Haring was one of the artists who was open about being a gay man. In 1988, at the launch of National Coming Out Day, Haring created an artwork that became a symbol of the observance.
The work depicts a figure stepping out from a dark place into a vibrant, colorful world. It celebrates living as one’s true self and continues to be internationally recognized as a symbol of National Coming Out Day.
