Since its publication in 1923, The Art Spirit has been a long-selling guide to the arts, passionately read by generations of young American artists. It is a masterpiece that influenced the likes of David Lynch and Keith Haring.

The author, Robert Henri, was a prominent painter in the early 20th-century American modernist art scene. He taught at art schools for many years, and this book is based on transcripts of his lectures. Why has a single painter’s lecture notes remained a beloved guide to artists for over 80 years? The answer becomes clear upon reading—it’s because this book offers a truly electrifying experience for aspiring young artists. It is a heartfelt call to arms that leaves the reader stirred.

"While there are many books in which artists share their views on art and practical teaching methods, very few have endured not only as art guides but also as books of youth and life. Even after the painter's own fame faded, the book remained. In that sense, The Art Spirit stands as a unique and extraordinary presence." (from the commentary by Makoto Takimoto)

A legendary classic that, for some reason, had never been translated into Japanese until now. Its words are sure to resonate with the souls of young Japanese artists.

Robert Henri
Born in Ohio, USA. Studied painting in the United States and France. Starting in 1891, he began teaching while becoming a central figure in the "Ashcan School," known for its realistic portrayals of everyday life. His students at Parsons School of Design in New York included Edward Hopper.
